Sinful Savage Tigers began on a weathered stage at the Kentuck folk festival in Northport, Alabama in the Fall of 2008, when college friends Seth Martin and Rob Guthrie reimagined and rearranged their respective backlog of songs to forge something fast, free-wheeling and fierce. Calling on the help of multi-instrumentalist Joshua Clell Langford, the Tigers recorded their first album Rain is the Soup of the Dogs in Heaven over the course of three days in late December of 2008. The nine song debut, released in June of 2009, pulled together influences ranging from Graham Parsons to James Mathus, from the Kinks to AM country, from Gillian Welch to Guided By Voices.
With the debut album in tow, Martin reassembled the band back home in North Carolina, recruiting Durham guitarist David Bernay (Holler) and bassist Jones Smith (Woodwork Road Show, Possum Creek) to create a string band trio that could trade equally in thick hooks and sharp lyricism. In September 2009, Southern Cultures, an arts quarterly published by the Center for the Study of the American South, chose the track "Natural Ghost" for inclusion in their annual music issue.
After spending 2009 developing a loyal local following, the Tigers added bassist Seth Barden (the Brand New Life, Black Swamp Bootleggers) on upright in the Spring of 2010. And, when Bernay moved to Texas in July of 2010, Martin reached out to multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Andrew Marlin (Mandolin Orange). Sinful Savage Tigers continues to play to enthusiastic crowds in North Carolina and Virginia.
